The Storm is over; Now what should I do?

Hopefully you’ve read our blog on Safety After the Storm. During electrical storms, make sure you stay away from windows, avoid metal pipes and do not use a land line telephone. Also, don’t bathe or shower, to prevent electrical shock.

So now the storm is over and you have taken necessary safety precautions; now what? First and foremost, document everything through notes, dates and times and of course pictures. This will all help the adjuster and in turn you, the homeowner, to make sure you are fully compensated.

Notify your insurance company to let them know about any and all damage as soon as possible. They will send out an adjuster to help determine the extent of the damage and start the process of your claim. Jeff at Advanced Home Improvements can help you through any confusion and help you get the most from your insurance company. Call him at 763-286-4000 for a free, no obligation estimate.

The calm after the storm

The calm after the storm

Take a walk around the exterior of your home checking for debris from trees, roofs, siding etc. If there was a lot of wind, your roof was probably hit the hardest. Have a professional look for missing shingles, cracks, holes and leaks.

Don’t forget to look up into trees for split branches or ones ready to fall. These could be dangerous if left unattended. Remove large fallen branches or hire someone for large pieces.

Siding also needs to be checked. Although sometimes less visible, there could be small holes or cracks in stucco siding. All types of siding are susceptible to damage; wood, fiber cement, stone, brick, stucco and vinyl. You could also have broken boards, stripped paint or discoloration on wood siding.  Don’t ignore cracks in brick.

Flying debris could have damaged windows. Check for cracked or shattered windows, especially around the seals.

Sump pumps can remove water in basements and other flooded areas. Dehumidifiers can help with excess water damage and help control mold and mildew.

Don’t forget your driveway. Although concrete is strong, check for splitting or cracking. Any small damage could be hazardous down the road.

If it is all too overwhelming, give Jeff a call at 763-424-2979 and he can help you walk through the necessary steps. Advanced Home Improvements -”Large enough to handle your needs, but small enough to care”

Safety – After The Storm

RoofDamageSafetyTreeDownStorm damage is almost inevitable in Minnesota. Before you venture out to check out the damage, be aware of health hazards and safety. Unless something is life threatening, wait until it is safe to look around; then act as quickly as possible to minimize the chance that the damage could continue.

Walk around your home and check everywhere. There may be more damage than you first realize. If trees are down, you also need to check for broken branches or cracked limbs. These are very dangerous and could easily fall at a later date and hurt people or your property.

Have a professional check your roof. High winds can damage just as much as hail. If there are tree branches on the ground, it is likely that they hit the roof first before it landed on the ground. Advanced Home Improvements can provide you with a free estimate and they know safety procedures for checking for damage. Do NOT climb on your roof by yourself. There could be weak spots you can’t see. Professionals know where and what to look for.

Beware of sharp objects like broken glass or exposed nails. Check all windows for cracks or if they are shattered. You don’t need to add personal injury to the property damage you may already have.

Shut off the main gas line if you smell gas. If there is any water damage, shut off all power to your home. If storm water has soaked into any walls; it is very possible it reached the electrical wiring. Watch for downed electrical lines and call your utility company or 911 immediately if found. Stay away.

If it is safe to go outside, take as many pictures as you can to capture damage before you move anything. Take interior pictures of any water damage or other interior property damage. The more documentation you have for your insurance adjuster, the better.

After documentation, make temporary repairs if needed. Remove glass, tree limbs and other debris and cover broken windows. If there is water damage to the interior of your home or holes in your roof – contact a reliable contractor as soon as possible. Don’t climb on your roof alone. A professional will take the necessary precautions if the roof is not safe.

So call your trusted, local contractor at Advanced Home Improvements. Jeff Tatur will sit down with you and walk you through the procedures you need to take. He will also provide a free estimate and answer questions about your insurance. 763-424-2979 Call Jeff today.

Storm Chasers-Don’t Be A Victim

Beware of Storm Chasers

Beware of Storm Chasers

In 2016 alone, there were over 20,200 reports of severe weather involving wind, hail or tornadoes. Storm chasers pay attention to weather reports and know insurance companies will allow for roof replacements. They blanket those areas, pass out leaflets or show up for unannounced inspections and take advantage of vulnerable unsuspecting home owners.

Watch for these Scams

  • Raising price of a job after it has started.  Some dishonest contractors offer a very low bid that they hope the homeowner will jump at. Then they claim unexpected costs or unforeseen “problems” arise. Sometimes they may even remove the old roof and say they will leave if more payments are not made. Usually the contractor and the homeowner discuss upfront any problems that may affect prices later. There may be circumstances when changes may occur; like where a roof’s decking may not be obvious until upper layers have been removed.  A change order that both agree upon should be signed if any increase or decrease is in order. Contractors get notice ahead of time if material costs go up, so that should not be an issue.
  • High Tactic Pressure – Homeowners have little experience on such a large expense such as replacing a roof; it is usually only done one or twice in their lifetime. Some scammers will pressure you with a special deal and try to get you to sign a contract on the spot. Avoid signing any waivers or contingency agreements.
  • Watch for out of state tags on their trucks – Always ask if they are associated with an out of state company. Many use a PO Box as an address and forward their calls out of state to appear local.
  • Some storm chasers travel with their own adjusters -This is a multi million dollar industry. Storm scammers can also pretend to be your insurance company, or tell you that they have been sent by your insurance company:  they may ask for personal information on the phone. Your insurance company should always let you know ahead of time before a contractor etc. is sent.
  • FEMA Impersonators – If anyone claims they are endorsed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, this could be a scam. FEMA doesn’t endorse contractors.
  •  So always be patient and calm. If you don’t understand something, ask it to be explained to you. Trust your local contractors.  They will take the time to sit down with you and explain the process.
  •  Advanced Home Improvements – Osseo, MN will always keep you, the homeowner, their number one priority. Don’t be a victim of a storm chaser. Call Jeff now for a free estimate. 763-286-4000

Increase your Homes Value, Maple Grove, MN and add a Deck

While the weather in Minnesota doesn’t seem to be able to make up its mind; the warmth WILL come eventually.

Prepare for spring and summer and get a jump start on your new outdoor enertaining area…your deck. Not only will a deck provide you and your family an new area of your home to enjoy and spend time together; but it will increase your homes value as well.

HGTV claims that an average homeowner will recoup 65-90% of their investment by adding a deck. Not only that, but if you are planning on selling your home in the next 5 years, adding a deck will make your backyard more appealing to prospective buyers…especially to those who don’t want to have to move into a home that they will have to put a lot of work into.

The cost of you deck can vary widely…this will all depend on: the type of materials used, the size, and any extra touches you may want to add. As most people know, doing the work yourself will save you a huge chunk of money…however, we want you to be aware that deck construction isn’t easy.

At Advanced Home Improvements, our deck installers are trained by the manufacturers to ensure you the fullest warranty possible.

A Place for Memories to be Made

“A deck is described as a platform structure with no roof over it. I prefer to describe a deck as an outdoor entertaining area; bringing friends and family together to a place where memories will surely be made.”

-Jeff Tatur

According to Remodeling Magazine, a deck can give you the highest return on investment of any home remodeling project. For example; a Cedar deck measuring 16ft x 20ft can cost an average of $12,100. The resale price for that same deck is an average of $8,800. This means the percentage of your return investment is well over 50%!

While adding a deck to your home is a wonderful investment; there are many other benefits that come along as well. A deck adds character and a certain sparkle to what can sometimes be an dull and dreary backyard.

Imagine your future deck…a place to hold birthday parties…a quiet escape from your busy household…a view of the sunset on a warm summer night; the memories are endless.

While a deck can bring a lot of pleasure and vivaciousness to your home, as a contractor being in business for almost 20 years, we feel it is our duty and responsibility to educate homeowners on the potential dangers that come with having a deck.

Did you know that in the past 5 years, 17 deaths and 350 injuries were reported in connection to decks failing? These decks fail because of improper construction and contractors who neglect the small details that can often be the most important. For example; if you use galvanized hanger nails instead of triple coated zinc nails, the nails will literally rot in the joist causing the joist to let go within a few years. That is a scary fact and a small detail that cannot go unnoticed.

Installing quality decks and understanding how the manufacturer specifies them to be built is something we pride ourselves in knowing; and also provides you with peace of mind knowing that your deck will be built to its fullest warranty and value with unsurpassed quality and satisfaction.

At Advanced Home Improvements, we can assure you will be enjoying your deck for many, many years to come; creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Prepare yourself for your next home improvement project

As with most homeowners, you probably have a mile-long list of improvements you want to make on your home now and in the future, but how do you prepare for it?

Deciding what areas of your home are in need of improvement is a good place to start. Take into consideration the age of your home; it may be time for your roof or siding to be replaced.

A roof typically needs to be replaced every 10 years; however, if there has been any storms in your area recently, it may need to be replaced sooner. Same thing with your siding.

Many different weather conditions can negatively affect your roof and siding on your home; wind, hail, ice, etc.

If you suspect that your roof or siding needs to be replaced; get an estimate from a reputable contractor. Advanced Home Improvements will come out to your home, inspect your roof and/ or siding for damage, and can also handle the insurance claim for you if, in fact, you have storm damage.

Call Advanced Home Improvements for more information and a FREE estimate!!
