Winter Time = Roofing Time!

Your roof is your homes first barrier against the elements; taking care to ensure its integrity is important, especially with spring right around the corner.

While the temperature fluctuates, your shingles are in a state of expanding and contracting. In older shingles, this puts even more wear and tear on them, which can cause curling and cracking on your shingles. What results from cracked shingles? Leaks in your roof which can lead to water damage in your home.

{Notice the curling on the corner of these shingles…had this gone untreated, those shingles would start to crack, leading to leaks in this familys’ home.}

Most people would think that the winter time is far too dangerous to replace your roof. While this is correct, our roofers time out their work with the weather, and only do roof work when weather conditions aren’t as severe. A major advantage to you is that the winter time can often be a slow time for roofers, which means they can get your job done in a faster time!

If you are already noticing cracks and curling in the shingles on your roof, don’t wait until the spring time to take action; it will only get worse and lead to leaks in your home (which, we all know, will end up causing more damage and your home will need more repairs).

Got Mice? Get a FREE Siding Inspection!

Do you hear the pitter patter of little feet scurrying about your home at night? How about that lovely moment where you open your kitchen cupboard to grab a box of cereal for your childs breakfast only to find a corner of the box has a huge hole chewed through it and a few droppings nearby?

Well my friend, you’ve got mice!

Sure, that’s one way to get rid of them, but let’s face it, we’re not all cat people.

This past year has been exceptionally bad as far as mice invading our homes and offices, destroying food and marking their territory. Also, they find that electrical wires are particularly pleasant to chew on…which can damage the wiring and lead to electrical fires. I wonder how many electrical fires that have been labeled “cause unknown” were really due to mice chewing up the wiring?

Not only does a mouse infestation take a toll on your wallet having to replace the food that they got into and the cords and wires they chewed up, but it also created a very unsanitary environment. Mice spread harmful and potentially fatal diseases including, but not limited to: Salmonella, Meningitis, Tapeworm, and Ringworm.

Mice are dirty, filthy, disease spreading creatures that with the use of poisons and traps can be eliminated….but does it keep them away for good? Do you want to risk the health of your family finding out the hard way?

There are many ways that mice can get into your home. What those with older homes are finding is that they are anything but airtight. Also, their siding may have gaps or be outdated.

Have us out to inspect your siding for FREE, and we’ll figure out where those pesky buggers are making their way into your home!

Behind the Scenes of Your Bathroom

Last month we posted about how easy it can be to install a new bathtub in your home. Not only does this small remodel improve the appearance of your bathroom, but it also improves the health of you and your family.

Here is a before picture of the bathroom we remodeled with the bathtub insert, showing the disturbing mold issue that occurs in most households without people even knowing about it.

Did you know that when you use your bathroom and disturb the moldy areas, microscopic spores are released into the air?

Many health problems can occur if this goes untreated. Some of the mild issues include: headaches, eye irritation, respiratory problems, and skin rashes.

The photo above shows what we consider to be a major mold problem. Had this bathroom gone untreated, the mold could have lead to more severe health problems, such as: memory loss, chronic fatigue, debilitating headaches, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and in extremely severe cases cancer and even miscarriages!

Advanced Home Improvements knows that maintaining a safe and healthy environment for your family is your number one concern. Here are some things you can do to prevent the buildup of mold in your home:

  • Open your windows or install an exhaust fan in your bathroom to keep the air circulating
  • Use a dehumidifier to control the humidity
  • Clean your bathroom daily with bleach or white vinegar (the acid in vinegar kills up to 99% of bacteria, don’t worry about the smell, it will dissipate within a few hours)
  • Keep the temperature of your bathroom in a range from 66-71 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Keep the humidity levels between 29-49%

In most cases a complete bathroom remodel is not necessary, however, you can have just a few areas fixed to eliminate a high percentage of the mold and alleviate this hazardous risk. Unfortunately, in certain situations, a full bathroom remodel is the best way to fix any and all of your mold problems. With the new products that are available it won’t be an issue again.

Here is the same bathroom pictured above; mold removed, and new bathtub insert installed.

This family took the steps necessary to ensure the health and safety of their loved ones, and so can you!

Rustic Lake and Log Home Improvement Project

What intrigues me about large home improvement projects?

I love to impress people with how talented the people working for us are. Their years of experience shine through and help establish the direction of the project.

Our company strives to treat all our home improvement projects, big or small, as if they were our own home. One project in Moose Lake was a great fun adventure and got my creative juices flowing. Advanced Home Improvements did remodeling throughout the house as well as add log siding to the exterior and a great deal of landscaping.

The landscaping was the fun part…we brought together the log rails and the fire pit, so that it would flow and look original. The fire pit now sets off the entire back yard. The log that surrounds it and the log deck and railing, along with the log siding all unite in harmony.

Keep tuned to my blog for other details on this Lake Home. We look forward to more lake home and log home remodeling projects.

Home Really Is Where The Heart Is

A while back my wife, April, got the tremendous opportunity to be a guest on the Dr Oz Show. After watching the episode, a revelation came to me…Dr Oz and Advanced Home Improvements have a lot in common. We both deal with a structure and the understanding all of the parts.

This particular show was about the human body and the important organs of the heart, brain and kidney. Dr Oz spoke about how important it is to keep these organs healthy to maintain total body health. In the home improvement business, we also take the structural parts of a house; footings, framing and roof for granted. Without these main areas of your home being understood properly, it is hard to have proper construction occur on your home, whether it is for siding, windows, a deck or even a new remodeled kitchen or bath.
April got to touch the actual organs and realized how a healthy body and healthy organs can affect the whole body, just as a new updated (healthy) home improvement project can affect your whole home and well being. So, April touched human organs and Jeff touches home improvement projects. Having a new kitchen project or deck project can just make you “feel good.” This really touched home with me, since I donated a kidney to my brother back in 1999.
